Representations of disaster victimhood: Framing suffering and loss after the 1934 Bihar-Nepal earthquake

Abstract This article seeks to address a thematic thread that remains relatively unexplored in historical disaster research—victimhood—through an analysis of publications by relief funds and their supporters the aftermath 1934 earthquake Bihar northern India. By examining representations victimhood, I aim explore significance perceptions constructions victimhood late colonial period. Based on photographs, illustrations, descriptions suffering images texts, suggests effectively relied imagery contained, one hand, absence bodies and, other, feminized anthropomorphization suffering. The narratives underlying such depictions victims are based constitution contemporary culturally founded imageries. texts focuses how were effective communicating audiences. tentatively argue historically tropes what constituted victim formed along two appealed nationalist readership respectively. These conceptualizations basis for collecting aid reconstruction, rather than loss life, dispossession, social marginalization, displacement suffered earthquake.
